This
factory was created by the direction of the faience manufacture of
Nimy located to Mons in Belgian Hainaut and which existed since
1789. The purpose of this new establishment was to avoid the loads
due to the export of Belgium towards France as towards the other
countries of the world because the loads of export in France were
weaker than in Belgium. It is then built on a property belonging to
Joseph Clerquin on a surface of +-13000 m2. This property will not
cease growing to be in 1938 at the end of the exploitation of
+-64000 m2 and will employ at this time from 450 to 500 workers and

The Faience
manufacture of Onnaing, towards the end of the 19th century, makes
great strides growing thanks to the rail-bound transport
facilitating the contribution of the raw materials. At that time the
modellers, who are true artists having been formed at the academic
schools of Valencians create models of jugs representing of the
politicians such as
Déroulède,
Poincaré,…
but also of
the characters known as the
Alsatian one,
Francisco Ferrer (teacher shot in Spain), Marianne, Jeanne d' Arc,…
of the jugs
feminist symbol the
jupe Culotte
as well as
models of imagination such as
fish, the monk,
the duck, the Main pig of hotel,…
The floral
jugs are not remains about it, they are even in my opinion of
realisation more complete and harmonious like the jug
Tango, Mille
fleurs, Chrysanthème, Cyclamen, Giroflées, Capucines, Iris,
Oeillet,…
the barbotine
parts like general public what allows a considerable production in
order to satisfy the local but so foreign customers. The production
out of barbotine is more and more diversified creations of vases,
flowers stand, covers, quills, jugs of form, moneyboxes, services of
smokers, ashtrays, centres of tables, columns, bouquetières are very
numerous. Each year, 5 new models of jugs are created.

Unfortunately in 1914 the First World War is declared. E at the end
of 1918 the renewal of activity of the Faience manufacture of
Onnaing will be quite difficult because the madness of these moments
ransacked all the equipment of Faience manufacture (Moulds, mixers,
crushers, mixers, filters, boilers, etc). In spite of superhuman
efforts, goodwill and energy to maintain the production, this one
stops on February 8, 1938. |
